Is Selling Evil? What Does Jesus Think?
My 9 year old son wanted to learn how to start an online business so, I started creating small tasks he could do to build a business.
Off he went…and as if on cue, there were those “keyboard warriors” posting comments like “you’re not helping, you’re selling.”
So I started to ask the question “Is Selling Evil?”
Can you be a Great Commission Christian and sell things to people?
While contemplating these questions a friend of mine was preaching and he mentioned this verse and immediately I got my answer:
“Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, SELL your possessions and give…” Matthew 19:21
If you want to give you gotta sell.
I began to remember other stories in the Bible:
“there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet.” Acts 4:34-35
There were no needy people in the church because someone got out there and sold something!
Selling isn’t evil.
I love Dan Sullivan’s definition of sales:
“Selling is getting someone intellectually engaged in a future result that is good for them and getting them to emotionally commit to take action to achieve that result.”
Selling is serving because you’re getting someone to take action on something that is good for them.
Of course you have people selling something that in the end is bad for people but that’s not what I think you, or my 9-year-old son for that matter, are trying to do.
When you sell something you are helping someone solve a problem and they pay you according to the size problem you fix.
I’m personally grateful for sales people that are out there serving and solving people’s problems.
My 9-year-old son had a goal of making $10 so he could take the family out to get ice cream. It took him 22 days and he made his first $10 sale!
And thankfully, there was someone selling ice cream that day so we could celebrate!
